In the 1930’s during the Great Depression, many small businesses in Australia went to the wall.

In 1932, Theodore Bruce Auction’s Fred Bruce had the unfortunate task of selling the entire contents of a general carpentry shop in the city square of Adelaide.

Included in the sale was the workshop, plant, hand tools, raw materials and stock…including three coffins!

Fred recalls: “The first coffin sold and as I was offering the second coffin, a gentleman stepped out of the crowd. ‘Would you mind Mr Bruce if I tried it on for size?’ he asked, much to the entertainment of the crowd. I allowed him to do so and he promptly climbed in and closed the lid!”

“He stayed in the coffin for some moments, opened the lid, climbed out, bid enthusiastically and purchased the coffin!”
