Estate of Elizabeth Wangenheim, A Collection of Early Australian Legal Documents,
Elizabeth Wangenheim (1835-1925) was the wife of Gus Wangenhein (1826-1882). The Wangenheims were one of Sydney's wealthiest Jewish families of the 19th Century, owning real estate in Eastern Sydney including a number of hotels. Gus is described as a publican, musical venue proprietor, amateur musician & vocalist, often he and the hotels were the center of the bohemian community of Sydney. Elizabeth was recognized as the brains behind the business ventures.
Documents date from 1846 to 1930's, includes indentures, leases, conveyances, mortgages, valuations & receipts. Many concern land in Stanley Street, Woolloomooloo from the Riley Estate, includes a 1851 Conveyance with ink sketch map of 'allotment nineteen and part of eighteen of block twelve E of the Riley Estate Woolloomooloo' with signatures of William Hardy (Government Surveyor) and William Henry Kerr + a 1847 Copy of the Grant of 100 Acres of land known by the name of Walloomooloo Farm to Edward Riley. Many interesting documents concerning properties in Clovelly, Hurstville Moorefields Estate, Hunter Street Sydney, Macleay Street Potts Point, Darlinghurst, Marrickville & Petersham. Among the signatures are James Norton, Robert Campbell, John Walton, James Hume (Architect) & George Alfred Lloyd etc. Includes a copy of Elizabeth's father James Simmons will (1849), her mother Ada Simmons name appears in a number of documents.
Over a hundred documents, a mixture of vellum and paper, many with seals.
