Description:

Everin Javaro

Obohutaigu'e (Tree Bark)
Omie bark cloth
Produced by the Women of the Huvaimo (Mount Lamington) region, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea. The materials all come from the natural environment. The fabric is like felt to look at and touch. It is made from the fibre of palm trees from the tropical forests. The women have pounded the wood pulp into flat sheets and after drying have painted on them with designs of tribal, family and cultural inheritance. They combine layers of natural materials from the jungle, tree pulp with organic dyes extracted from plants. Sometimes some volcanic mud is used to give some deeper grey-black tones.

    Provenance:
  • The David Baker Collection. David Baker was President of the Oceanic Art Society for many years prior to his death in 2009. In 2002 he first went to the Mount Lamington region in Oro Province and talked with the Omie women about selling their traditional Omie bark cloths. On many subsequent visits he purchased these fine museum quality works of art and brought them to Australia for exhibitions with Annandale Galleries. Currently (January 9 - November 2023) there is an exhibition at the Chau Chak Wing Museum at Sydney University, 'Omie barkcloth: Pathways of nioge', which comprises of works collected by David Baker. A review of this exhibition can be found on the following link.
