On 20 May we introduce a new series of weekly auctions that are mini versions of our monthly Emporium Auction. On Wednesday 20 May features affordable art, glass, ceramics, unusual objects, miscellany, books, decorative arts and furniture. Of particular note is a handwritten diary by Sir Robert L.M.Kirkwood K.C.M.G (1904-1984) entitled Handwritten Diary for the Year 1932 from the library of Martyn Cook. Robert Kirkwood was an Englishman educated at Harrow, in 1936 Tate & Lyle – the company he was working for – sent him to the West Indies, by 1948 he was Chairman of the Jamaican Sugar Manufacturers Association making him the most powerful businessman on the island and a pillar of the elite Jamacian society. The diary features extensive entries each day detailing numerous social engagements, golf games, financial meetings and his wife of fifty one years, Sybil, is mentioned often. Also included with this lot is a leather bound notebook titled ‘What I know About Golf by Sir Robert L.M.Kirkwood’, pen entries are dated 1975.
