“MARTINSELL” – HOUSE AUCTION

The contents of ‘Martinsell’ – the home of the late Sir Alexander Russell Downer KBE and Lady Downer – are to be auctioned on Sunday, February 7.

Sir Alexander was an avid collector of Georgian furniture and 18th and 19th Century British and Continental Art and the auction includes paintings by:

William Turner (1789 -1862)
Richard Wilson (1714 – 1782)
Phillip Jakob De Loutherbourg (1740 – 1812)
Sir Geoffrey Kneller (1646 – 1723)
TM Gilbert (19th Century)
Peter Monamy (1681 – 1749)
Ludolf Backhuysen (1630 – 1708)
Australian artists including two important works by Sir Hans Heysen (1867 – 1968).
Eighteenth and early 19th Century furniture including Hepplewhite style chairs, Secretaire bookcase, fall front writing desks and mahogany card table are complemented by an equally impressive offering of exquisite collectables including porcelain, silver and glassware.

The approximately 400 lots on offer can be viewed on Friday 5 February and Saturday 6 February between 10am and 4pm, or by special arrangements with the auctioneer on the morning of the auction.
