A life in the spotlight
Theodore Bruce is delighted to bring to auction the Estate of the late Diana Fisher. Affectionately known as “bubbles’ for her bright personality and love of champagne, Diana was a journalist, TV personality and socialite.
Born in London, Diana moved to Australia with then husband, Humphrey Fisher, in 1964. She subsequently built a career here, working with major Australian print, radio and television media.
Among her many roles, Diana wrote columns for the Sydney Morning Herald and edited the social pages of the Australian Women’s Weekly and Women’s Day. She hosted her own radio show on 2BL, and was a panellist on long-running television programs, “The Inventors” and “Beauty and the Beast”.
In 2003, Diana was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia “for service to the community through a range of charitable organisations, and to the broadcast media.”
A leading royal commentator
Diana and Humphrey had been married by his father, the Archbishop of Canterbury, at London’s Lambeth Palace in 1959. The Archbishop had also officiated at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in 1947.
From those early brushes with royalty, Diana became a leading royal commentator – reporting for media organisations globally – and a proud royalist.
She led Channel Seven’s royal commentary team during The Queen’s 1965 Australian tour, and covered every royal birth, death, marriage and major event in subsequent decades.
Pictured at right is a Cut Glass Decanter Commemorating the Coronation of King George V, 1911.
A social identity
Diana was a social identity in both London and Sydney, on close terms with actors, writers and celebrities.
A highlight of the auction is a pair of visitor books from Diana’s London & Sydney homes with signatures from her many dinner guests – including J.B.Priestley, Za Za Gabor, Harold Wilson, Sybil Thorndyke, Larry Olivier & Joan, Errol Flynn & Noel Coward.
Also on offers is a 1989 poster, signed & inscribed to Diana from Joan Sutherland.
