The Dr L.G Jung Collection of Asian Antiquities Soars Past Estimates
On Tuesday night we auctioned the Dr L.G Jung Collection of Asian Antiquities, an exquisite selection of rare cloisonné, lacquerware, porcelain & metal objects, plus Persian rugs and books. And it proved to be one of our most popular auctions this year – with strong interest seeing hammer prices soar.

An Extraordinary & Beautiful Collection
At auction for the first time this week, the collection was compiled over decades by Dr Ladislav Gustav Jung, a Czech-born opera singer and lawyer.
Changing his name to Henry Young after taking out Australian citizenship, he was a well known figure on the Sydney antiques scene during the 1970s and ’80s, consulting on Asian ceramics and acquiring much of this collection.
The first lot under the hammer was the stunning Meiji Period Japanese Cloisonne Charger (at left). Setting the tone for the auction, it achieved a hammer price of $1,400 from an estimate of $600-800.
A Fine Japanese Cloisonne Bud Vase, Meiji Period, measuring just 6cm and featuring beautiful bird, seascape and floral detail, was another cloisonne highlight, selling for $2,750 including buyers premium (IBP).
Dr Jung compiled a striking collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain, including Famille Rose & Verte, Qingbai and Guan Ware.
The standout lot on Tuesday night was a Chinese Cizhou ‘Partridge Feather’ Glazed Meiping Vase (at right) dating to the Song/Jin Dynasty. With multiple bidders, it soared past its estimate of $2,000-4,000 to sell for $45,000 IBP.
Also drawing strong interest was a Chinese Famille Noir Porcelain Squared Baluster Vase, 20th Century ($8,125 IBP), a Chinese Qingbai Glazed Circular Porcelain Box with Cover, Yuan Dynasty ($4,500 IBP) and a Pair of Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Plates ($6,250 IBP).
A large Chinese Cizhou Vase, Northern Sung Dynasty reached $5,000 IBP from an estimate of $300-500, while a stunning Chinese Famille Verte Porcelain Jar with Cover, Late 19th Century sold for $1,625 IBP.
Among other highlights – a Bronze Figure of Avalokiteshvara Guanyin, Ming Dynasty ($7,000 IBP), a Chinese Export Ware Silver Footed Dragon Bowl, 19th Century ($3,000 IBP) and an Antique Persian (Iran) Varamin Rug ($1,875). Bidders were also drawn to a lovely Japanese Lacquerware First Tier ‘Jubako’ Compartment with Cover, 18th Century, which sold for $1,375 (IBP).
