Description:

A 1914 Victor Motorcycle and sidecar Build number 5
Engine number 40147

This is the only remaining example of 'The Victor' motorcycle.

'The Victor' motorcycle was made by Mr Edward Victor Bowen. He assembled a total of five motorcycles in the shed at the rear of his bicycle shop, which was located in Windsor Crescent, Surrey Hills, Victoria.

Each motorcycle was made for Mr Bowen's own use. And each was sold when the next one was completed. The first one was built in 1908.

This motorcycle was thought to be a '1912' model (refer 'A-Z of Australian-made Motorcycles: 1893-1942', by Robert Saward). However, it was most probably made in 1914, but not earlier than 1913, by its engine number.
The engine was made in Tottenham, London, by J A Prestwich Industries ('JAP"), and bears engine number 40147, which appears to place it's manufacture at around early 1913 at the earliest. It is a 1,000 cc V-twin configuration, with Bosch magneto. The carburettor is by The Aston Motor Accessories Co. Ltd., ("A.M.A.C.").
The gears are 3-speed rear hub gears branded "Tourist Trophy Three Speed Armstrong Patented, '2470', Mark VII, for 8 H.P. Motors". The seat is by "Lycett's, Western Works Birmingham, No: 4", 'La Grande' model. The steering head is by Chater Lea.
The bike sports a side car called 'The "Rock" Side Car', which was made by Underwood Bros. & Co., of 244 Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn, Melbourne at the time the bike was made. The manufacturer's plate on the sidecar gives us this information, as well as the matching coachwork of the bike and sidecar.
Everything on the bike and sidecar is preserved in perfect 'as used' working order both inside and out (except for the Miller & Co Ltd/Acme acetylene lighting system which has been cleaned, preserved and otherwise left as found in the interests of originality). Every endeavour has been made to ensure that the bike is also completely original throughout, and preserved to museum standards.
'The Victor' is in absolutely original preserved condition. It is in perfect running order as it was on its day of retirement in the early 1900s, except for the drive belt to the rear wheel, which is the original one and is now too aged to be usable.

The canvas tonneau for the sidecar passenger, which clips to the sidecar and fastens around the passenger's neck, is the original.

Winner overall of the Preservation Class at Motorclassica in 2011.
