Description:

A 1923 Alvis 12/40 "Ducksback" Tourer Chassis number 2361
Engine number 2707

T.G.John began manufacturing Alvis cars in Coventry, England in 1919 with coachwork supplied by Cross & Ellis and Carbodies. In 1921 the first Alvis vehicle, a 10/30 won a gold medal in the London to Holyhead Trial. The 11/40 and 12/40 models were introduced in 1922, and the following year, the first 12/50 model won the 200 mile race at Brooklands at an average speed of 93.29 mph, taking 39 class records in one day at the famous race track. Alvis was a true automobile engineering company designing and engineering everything from concept to the finished rolling chassis. This was complemented by stylish and sophisticated bodywork from the leading coach builders of the time. Very reliable, with impressive performance as evidenced from success on the track, Alvis produced good looking, quality hand built cars with an enviable reputation until the last model produced in 1966, the TF21 Series IV, and production ceased in 1967 after the manufacture of almost 22,000 very special motor cars

The car record of the Alvis Car and Engineering Co Ltd states car number 1664 with engine number 2702 was dispatched on the 7th December 1923, with the remarks, chassis only for Australia. Exported to Australia the chassis was sent to Charles Kirkham of Petersham, Sydney for the fitting of a tourer body. It is not known who the original owners were but the car became the property of Ken Heath of Quirindi, a small town on the north west slopes region of NSW. The car was then purchased by renowned automotive engineer and collector, Les Miller of Hornsby who whilst looking into the purchase of old banjos and guitars from a shop in Coonabaran spotted a photograph of the 12/40 and enquired if it was for sale - to be told, "it belongs to my dad". Miller purchased the car, which still ran but had no body other than the scuttle. He then sold the car in the 1980s to Andrew Booth owner of Orchid Cars. Booth was an English dealer who exported the Alvis to the UK where it was sold to Olma Stokes, who had worked in the drawing office for the Alvis company. Olma Stokes commissioned the new body trim and wings. The current owner, who in his time has owned over 100 Alvis cars and believes this to be the finest, bought the car from Stokes in Wales and returned it to Australia in 2006. Since then the car has been totally rebuilt to original specifications. The green paint is as per original as found on the chassis, whilst all the mechanicals are matching numbers as per the build sheet as are the 6 volt electrics, a credit to its rebuilder, Tony Heard.
