Description:

A 1937 Packard 120 Straight 8 Rumble-Seat Convertible Coupé Chassis number 290166
Engine number N/A

The luxury American Packard marque was in existence from 1899 until 1958. At the height of its success before the second world war, it was widely regarded as one of the premier luxury automobile manufacturers.

This superb example of the Packard 120 Straight 8 is an original right hand drive bodied convertible coupe with rumble-seat. It was first owned by Mr W.W.Thayer, a former Attorney-General and the acting Governor of Hawaii. He was also a Scout Commissioner and in this capacity visited Australia in 1938 along with his wife who was the president of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

This 1937 Packard is in resplendent condition with a very interesting provenance and fully documented history file. This rare Packard was an export RHD model loaded on to a ship bound for Melbourne, Australia, its final destination to be the Packard agents at the time, Kellow Faulkner. Whilst the ship was on a stop over in Honolulu, Thayer who wanted a prestigious RHD car as he was deaf in his left ear and felt it safer to drive with his good ear to the traffic so it is said, was made aware of this Packard. It was therefore unloaded and had affixed to the cowl, the brass delivery plate bearing the local Packard agent's name, Von Hamm-Young. Thayer was 67 years of age when he took possession of this Packard convertible and despite petrol rationing during the war years, clocked up 85,000 miles until 1955 when the car went to its second owner. Thayer was a recipient of the 'Silver Buffalo" award which since 1925 has only been presented 718 times, 14 of them to American Presidents. Wade Thayer's veteran's key return tag is still attached to the original Briggs and Stratton keys.

The second owner of the car in Honolulu was local businessman Walter Reinhardt, along with his wife June a collector of cars, and the Packard according to records did approximately just 350 miles from 1955 until the turn of the century 45 years later. The Reinhardts retired to California in 1962 and the Packard was stored in Honolulu until 1971 when it was then shipped to California. Upon the death of Walter Reinhardt his widow sold off their cars and this Packard was shipped to Melbourne, where it was again garaged for another 12 years. The current owner aware of the vehicle's presence in Ballarat in the State of Victoria purchased the vehicle. The Packard was still in very good original condition, without rust or damage. Engine wear was moderate. Work carried out by the present owner is as follows:
New windscreen glass and re-plating of pillars
New body mounts
Fuel tank treated and gas gauge unit
Front end ball joints
New rear wheel bearings
All brake cylinders sleeved with stainless steel new linings, drums ground, silicone brake fluid
NOS main and big-end bearings, new piston rings, valve grind, brass welsh plugs, manifolds machined, all engine bolt-ons re-built, new clutch and thrust, flywheel surfaced
NOS oil pump
Interior trim replaced to original patterns. Front seats trimmed in leather as per original.

This rare Packard is in excellent original condition with original patina. In 1947 some repainting was done at "Stanley's" paint shop, Honolulu according to the bumper sticker. Some original service stickers are still to be seen on the door jams.

The wonderful automobile is accompanied by documentation proving history and provenance. A new convertible top, still boxed also comes with the car as does a copy of the first printing of W.W Thayer's book, "Trade Wind Tales" published in 1944.
