Description:

A 1947 Chrysler Town & Country Woodie Convertible Chassis number 7404117
Engine number C3938874

The Woodie automobile is a throw back to the age before mass production and when most things were wooden rather than metal. The Woodie reminisces about the good old days whilst at the same time making a statement about social status. None does this more so than the Chrysler Town & Country Woodie Convertible with its evocation of the golf, polo or country club and it is the epitome of wealthy American transport for leisure time in the Hamptons or other playgrounds.
The Town & Country Woodie Convertible is classified by the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA) as an approved full classic; that is, "a fine or distinctive automobile …a Classic was high priced when new and was built in limited quantities."
A little over 8,000 were produced in 1947. It is a mahogany wood body rear of the firewall, with the back guards attached to the wooden body and has power roof operation. It is not known how many survive but they are rare and very collectible. The cars after 1948 and onward no longer featured real wood construction but simply wooden fascia panels. With a wheelbase of 127.5 inches and overall length of 216.25 inches and width of 77.75 inches the Town & Country is propelled by a 323.5 cu in straight eight cylinder engine with semi-automatic transmission with coil spring front suspension and semi-elliptical leaf rear suspension.
This fantastic example of the 1947 Chrysler Town & Country Woodie convertible offered has been treated to a wonderful restoration and is road-ready. This remarkable and very stylish vehicle runs and drives impeccably, whilst the quality of the wooden construction and detail would turn the head of a master boatbuilder! It was imported to Australia in early 2011 and is the only known example on the road in Australia.
It was featured at:
o Motorclassica 2011
o RACV Heritage Car Series City Club Foyer display January 2012
o The Chrysler Restorers Club of Australia National Rally in September 2013
Transfer of Victorian registration plates "NY 1947" is included in the sale.
