Description:

A 1951 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn Chassis number SDB100
Engine number S5OB

In the second half of the 20th Century, Rolls-Royce began its association with the British Royal Family. It was also after the second world war and the reputation gained therein that it became a world leader in aero propulsion. This was also the era of the coming of the Silver Dawn. Produced between 1949 and 1955, the Dawn was the first Rolls-Royce to be fitted with a Factory body rather than a coach-built body. Early model Silver Dawns were built primarily for export to the Dominions and the USA.

This 1951 Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn is a manual gearbox, short wheel based car, which was purchased new form the 1951 Australian Motor Show. With outstanding provenance and just three owners from new, this Australian delivered Dawn has been in current ownership for the last 22 years. In excellent original condition throughout, this well-cared for car was given a fresh coating of its Shell Grey over Tudor paintwork in1980. Its original interior, complete with Philco radio remains in excellent condition. The vehicle is accompanied by its original Rolls-Royce tool kit and handbooks.

This car is in excellent mechanical condition as attested by a substantial file indicating its maintenance history before and after its acquisition by the current owner in 1992. There are many documents of historical significance (including the car's first service card, and the original used-vehicle warranty supplied to Dr Floyd on his purchase in 1953) available with the purchase. The paintwork (the original shell grey over tudor grey) may best be described as tired but presentable. The interior woodwork is in immaculate condition following a full restoration in 2003. The leather is completely original and un-cracked, showing a patina compatible with its age. All small tools and oiling accessories (except the original flashlight) are in tact, as is the original owners manual with its unique wiring loom layout. The car is fitted with a Kellow-Falkiner (installed 1960s) Rolls-Royce approved transistor radio. The original 'His Masters Voice' valve radio for this car - and its documentation - was sourced by the owner after acquisition of the car and restored to full working order. It is available by separate treaty should a purchaser require it.

This is a genuine three-owner car. The original owner, Mr J. McDonald of Julumba Victoria took delivery from Kellow-Falkiner, the Australian distributor in November 1951. Dr John Floyd, a Melbourne Eye Surgeon, purchased the car through Kellow-Falkiner in 1963. He sold it, directly, to the current owner, a senior Melbourne academic, in 1992. The car has been garaged and road-registered throughout its life and has no rust whatsoever. It drives with full power and responsiveness and underwent a full Victorian road-worthiness test in 2012 prior to transition to club plates.
