Description:

A c. 1986 Derriman Fuel Challenge Car Chassis number 1

To be offered unreserved

The Department of the Environment has advised that this lot may require a licence to be exported from Australia due to its cultural significance.

As early as 1939 the Shell Oil Company had been involved in finding out who could travel the furthest on the same amount of fuel when two Company employees mad a friendly wager. Since then, around the world, the challenge, now known as the Shell Eco-Marathon has been taking place with events in 2014 in Manila, Houston and Rotterdam.

The Shell Eco-Marathon challenges teams to design, build and run ultra-energy efficient vehicles, inspiring young engineers to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency.

In the 1980s and early 1990s the precursor to the Shell Eco-Marathon, the Shell Mileage Marathon was a regular event in Australia, with the annual event held at Amaroo Park Raceway in NSW. The lightweight and very fragile vehicles were capable of producing some amazing fuel economy rates with the winner of the Shell Mileage Marathon of 1990 achieving 2,981.40 miles per gallon/1,055.44 kilometres per litre.

It is remarkable that the early Shell Mileage Marathon car offered here should have survived at all, let alone in such incredible original condition after 30 years. Most cars of this type would have been broken up or suffered through their fragility over this period of time. Astonishingly though this Shell Mileage Marathon contender is in absolutely amazing condition having suffered only minimal minor cosmetic damage. It comes complete with its original 10cc OS Max engine plus a secondary larger 18cc four valve unit along with various spares and electric components. It is believed that this car ran in the 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 events, winning the 1988 Open Commuter Class with a result of 582 mpg.

This is an outstanding opportunity to own a significant if obscure eclectic piece of automotive history in highly original condition. This ultra rare Derriman designed car was built as a total one-off with remarkable attention to detail and precision engineering.

Length 2300; width 750; height 570; ground clearance 50; weight 10.3 kgs.
