Description:

A Fine Old Basket Hook Figure, Middle Sepik River Area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, Mid-20th Century or Earlier,
this finely carved & ochre painted Basket Hook Figure is double sided so that it could be viewed from anywhere in the house when in use. Basket Hooks were used to protect food from rodents by hanging the basket hook from a rope from the ceiling no rodents could get down the single string and get to the net bags holding food hanging from the basket hook. Many world cultures had this technology but the Sepik River societies transformed their basket hooks into major works of art.
