Description:

A Fine Old Canoe Prow Ornament, Ramu River Area, Madang Province, Papua New Guinea,
this carving was once the front of a 4-5-meter-long canoe, the canoe was carved from a single tree including this figure. The long-nosed Birdman Ancestor figure is well carved with broad legs and the face becomes the torso. The finial is an abstracted crocodile head, one of the most important totemic clan animals is the Sepik & Ramu areas. Mid-20th Century.
