the Canoe Stanchion Ornament: This very fine old carving shows a well rendered mask with a totemic turtle below the finial was a 7-pointed star. The openwork carving along the side gives it sculptural appeal.

Sago Palm is a very important food source for people in many areas of New Guinea, the preparation takes a whole family working very hard to harvest a wild sago tree, cutting tree, spitting it open and then pulping the pith and washing through a sluice these pegs are used like clothes pegs to hold the sluice in place during the making of sago flour. This Peg is finely decorated by an ancestor head that is surmounted by a crazy looking bird. Utilitarian objects in the Abelam are often beautifully decorated as are these Sago Washing Pegs.
