A Fine Old Slit Gong Drum Terminal, Coastal Sepik River Area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, 19th Century,
on a custom stand.

This beautiful old male ancestor figure once adorned the end of a massive horizontal Garamut Slit Gong Drum that the Sepik & Ramu River societies are renown for. Each village had at least one if not several of the impressive drums were used in many traditional ceremonies but also allowed distant villages to communicate with each other.
