Description:

A Pair of Antique Framed Chinese Panguan Goldwork–Embroidered Civil Official Rank Badge (Buzi) Mid Qing Dynasty,
Goldwork embroidery (panjin xiu) is a traditional Chinese hand-embroidery technique that primarily uses gold or silver threads. The metal threads are laid on the surface in coiled patterns and secured with silk threads. This technique was already popular during the Tang and Song dynasties and was historically known as cuijin embroidery. They were commonly used for court garments and decorations for the wealthy and aristocratic households and are characterized by its sumptuous and luxurious appearance.

In goldwork embroidery, gold or silver threads are laid along the direction of the design and fastened with silk or velvet threads. The spacing between each securing stitch is typically between 0.5 and 1 cm, ensuring that the metal threads remain neat and visually pleasing.

When two threads are laid together, the technique is called panjin ("coiled gold"); when a single thread is laid, it is called cuijin ("gathered gold").

Goldwork embroidery pieces were mostly used by the imperial court, officials, and affluent families, and they possess extremely high artistic and collectible value."
