Description:

A Superb Old Stone Carved Pre-Contact Abelam Drum called Kang, Abelam People, Prince Alexander Mountains, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, 19th Century,
drums in New Guinea are essential to all traditional ceremonies, they are important family heirlooms passed down over generations. When I was field collecting drums were often the one type of artwork that people did not want to sell. This drum is finely incised with ancestral spirit figures and clan designs and has deep old patina from long use.

Provenance:
Ex John Friede Collection, NY USA. Freide made one of the most important private collections of New Guinea Art.
