Description:

A Very Rare North Korean Pakchon Lacquered Persimmon Timber Blanket Chest with Iron Lace Detail (mid Joseon dynasty, late 18th century)
with original iron lock
This piece would have only been made exclusively for, and owned by, either a royal or a noble family at the Joseon King's court because only those families were permitted to use red lacquer to decorate their furniture. It is called a Pakchon chest because of the place where it was made, which has been a part of North Korea since the Korean War over 70 years ago. The rarity of such chests, particularly one in such excellent condition as this, stems from the fact that none would have been allowed to be exported from North Korea since that time

  • Provenance: purchased in 1977 in Seoul, Korea
  • Dimensions: 90 x 85 x 45 cm
  • Condition: good, some splitting to timber, wear consistent with age & use
