An Admiral Fitzroy Barometer, 19th Century
this intriguing instrument was devised by Italian Physicist, Evangelista Toricelli in 1643. the barometer works by balancing the weight of mercury in the glass tube against the atmospheric pressure, much like a set of scales.
Admiral Robert Fitzroy was a pioneer of meteorology and is named with the invention of weather "forecasts". In later life, he develloped instruments, such as this barometer, as a way to make weather information more widely available for the safety of shipping and fishermen
