Description:

An Asmat Softwood Shield, Per Village, Mani River, Asmat Region, West Papua, Early 1980s,
series of four "BIPANE", shell nose ornaments on face of shield with small ancestor head projecting on a thin neck on top which runs into a crocodile shaped handle running full length of the shield on the reverse. Face immediately below protruding head is that of a "JIARI", (ancestor). Edges heavily trimmed with Sago palm leaf fibre & other leaves. Rich brown ochre & powdered shell white back ground.

Provenance: The Richard Knox Collection. Mr Knox worked in the oil industry based in Singapore and made multiple trips to the Asmat region in the 1970's and 1980's.
