Description:

An Early Micronesian Navigation Map,
known as Stick Charts which were used to navigate the Pacific Islands by Canoe. Made from straight and bent pieces of coconut fronds midribs and tied with sennit coconut fibre string, small Cowrie shells are tied in precise spots to identify Islands in the chain to navigate in traditional canoes from Island to Island. The names of the islands are indicated by paper labels affixed to the coconut fronds midribs.

  • Provenance: Colin and Patricia Brooks Collection. Colin Brooks worked as a geologist in West Papua and PNG in the late 1960's and 1970's, including with his friend, Robert Mitton. Brooks was one of three editors of Mitton's seminal book, The Lost World of Irian Jaya and a contributing photographer to the book, which was published posthumously.
