Description:

Apollinaris Match Striker (c1920) Burslem England, From The Private Collection Of Auctioneer John Williams (Decd).
10cm x 7cm.
Description As Found On WorthPoint. This Apollinaris match striker was made by the firm of W. Wood & Co. between 1873 and 1932 operating from the Albert Street Works in Burslem, Staffordshire, England. Authenticating this item, the mark on its base dates the piece from between 1915 and 1932. In addition to the ornate crown, it contains the symbol of the County of Stafford. The handsome three loop knot represents "the knot unites". This beautiful glazed and crazed ceramic Apollinaris advertising match holder and striker is an inch larger than similar match strikers. This striker does not have ridges per se. It has a rough surface for strikes between the two bands. The ample sloped dish allowed for remnants of used matches to safely be placed after use. Measurements are approximately 4.5" dia. x 3" h. Apollinaris is a German brand of mineral water which is still available for purchase in Europe and was on sale in the UK and U.S. at the time the striker was made. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips, nicks or cracks beyond the intended crazing.
