Barry Singleton was born in Ballarat, Victoria. His formal art training in sculpture and painting led to ceramics. He taught art, including ceramics, to technical college students at Warrnambool and in Castlemaine where, in 1970, he established a studio and held his first solo show at the Castlemaine Art Gallery.

In 1976 Barry worked, studied and lived in Japan with master potter Yasu Ogawara. He made subsequent trips to China and Japan where he also lectured, developing an aesthetic based on simple, strongly balanced and proportioned forms, evoking the calmness of Japanese pottery.

At his Kaweka Gallery, he works in porcelain – using white, iron blue, green, chun and copper red glazes, and also in stoneware – using a shino-style glaze, iron red, tenmoku and ash glazes. Recent work has textural surfaces that echo nature and the erosion of weathered stone, such as his ‘Crusted Cocoon Pots'.

Barry's work has been at the forefront of ceramics with numerous exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide and regional Victoria. His work is represented in Bendigo, Castlemaine, Shepparton and Sale Art Galleries, the Victorian Ceramics Group Collection, the Myer Bicentennial Collection, and private collections in Australia and overseas.
