Description:

DA BARBERINO, Francesco. Del Reggimento e de' Costumi delle Donne, 1815,
This 1815 Roman edition of Del Reggimento e de' Costumi delle Donne—Barberino's early fourteenth-century didactic treatise on the behaviour, education, and moral formation of women—belongs to the family of scholarly revivals and philological editions produced in Italy during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Editions of this period are desirable for their fidelity to manuscript tradition and for their role in re-establishing Barberino as a major Trecento author.

The "Indice di Federico Ubaldini Accresciuto" printed at the rear is an expanded scholarly index named after the seventeenth-century Barberino editor Federico Ubaldini; its presence here confirms this as one of the fuller academic issues.

  • Condition: Quarto, an appealingly crisp example retaining its wide uncut deckle edges, handsomely rebound in modern full calf of excellent workmanship, the spine with raised bands, gilt-lettered morocco labels in red and green, and delicate black fillet tooling. Engraved frontispiece portrait (light staining and foxing), title-page clean with an early ink signature; later ex-libris of Luigi Strano mounted to the front pastedown. Internally a sound and attractive textblock, lightly toned with intermittent foxing typical of early nineteenth-century Roman paper; margins generous throughout
