Description:

Elizabeth Nyumi Nungurrayi
(c.1947 - 2019)
Nunkumpa Near Kiwirrkura, 1995
synthetic polymer paint on canvas
Nyumi was a senior Pintupi woman and one of the leading female painters to emerge from Balgo in the late 1980s, recognised for her inventive interpretations of women's law and ceremony. In this important historical painting, concentric roundels, pathways and sinuous lines chart ancestral journeys and the presence of the creation serpent Tjartjal, who searches for a new home in a rockhole. The composition vibrates with the desert palette of reds, whites and ochres, punctuated by the black form of the serpent that anchors the painting. Nyumi's practice, begun in 1988, remained focused on women's concerns and the transmission of knowledge, situating her as a key figure in the expansion of Balgo art into national and international collections.
