  • Provenance: Giles Bettison has become one of Australia's most dominant & recognised glass artists. This acclaim can be attributed to his unique & strikingly beautiful application of colour, patterns & forms in his continual exploration of the traditional techniques of Murrini glass. His works invite a subtle contemplation of the environment in country South Australia, which inspires him.
He has evolved the ancient Venetian technique called "Murrini" or mosaic glass to construct patterned sheets from colored glass canes. He cuts and combines these sheets to build his luminous vessels piece by piece. Bettison is known world wide for his pioneering efforts using the "Murrini technique." His work is incredibly unique, combining old and new technology to create some of the finest glass available today.
from his 'Cell series', started in 1999. Bettison has adapted a traditional way of working with glass using minimal hot-shop technology: he uses a kiln but not a furnace. Through the 'murrini' technique of fusing small segments of coloured glass into a sheet that is hot-worked and rolled into a vessel form, Bettison is interested in abstracting and reconstructing visual elements of urban and rural environments that appeal for their design or emotional qualities, also through his 'Paddock', 'Travelogue' and and 'Vista' series. The 'Cell series' is 'to do with visual compositions, in the manner of a design exercise in pattern and colour and rhythm.'
This international success has allowed him the opportunity to spend a period of time in the USA, concentrating on creating work for various gallery and exhibition commitments.sabbiagallery.com/artists/giles-bettison/
