Description:

LIVIUS LIVY, Titus. Historiarum Libri Qui Supersunt Omnes, et Deperditorum Fragmenta,
Five vols., small octavo (approx. 16 × 10 cm). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spines gilt-ruled with decorative gilt panels and blue morocco lettering-pieces titled LIVII OPERA and volume numbers. Marbled boards in the classic early nineteenth-century style. Engraved bookplate or ownership ticket of Alexander Low to several volumes; early ink ownership inscription to front endpaper ("L. Straus").

Edited by Johann Theophilus Kreysig, following the recension of Arnold Drakenborch, using Bamberg and Vienna manuscript collations. A handsome mid-nineteenth-century scholarly edition from the Tauchnitz press—one of the most respected German houses of its period, known for producing accurate and affordable classical texts in compact formats.

Each volume opens with a prefatory note and bears the characteristic Tauchnitz crisp stereotype printing. Contents include the surviving books of Livy (I–XLV) with epitomes and fragmenta of the lost portions.
Alexander Low, early nineteenth-century owner (printed green ownership label).

Provenance:
Early ink name "L. Straus" on front flyleaf.

  • Condition: Bindings solid but showing expected rubbing and surface wear, notably to marbled boards (abrasion patches visible on several volumes). Leather spines darkened and lightly mottled but structurally sound. Endpapers with toning, some foxing; inner joints firm. Text blocks clean overall with some scattered foxing, occasional marginal stains, and minor paper flaws (small loss to blank margins on one or two leaves). Edges uniformly aged. A complete and honest set in well-preserved contemporary bindings.
