OTHER NOTES:
Martin Sharp's nostalgic attraction to people and places motivated this work at a time when public protest raged over major developments in Sydney's Haymarket area. Eternity was the inspired message of Sydney evangelist Arthur Stace, who chalked the word on inner city footpaths from the 1930s until 1967. Adapted for the New Year's Eve fireworks in 1999 and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Eternity has evolved into a symbol of Australian confidence and optimism.

'I just wondered what it meant I became fascinated by him as such a dedicated writer, writing such a powerful word.' Martin Sharp, 1990
