Mothers Story 2008
Acrylic on Belgian linen
Ruby inherited her mother, Linda Syddick's dreaming and stories. This painting tells a true story that happened at Haast's Bluff in 1945. Linda camped with some other people next to the windmill. One of the companions explained to them that it as for bringing water out of the ground. Later that night they were joined by an old 'witchdoctor' and his two wives. In the morning he panicked at the sight of the windmill, which he thought was a devil. He tried throwing spears and magic rocks at the windmill but they were deflected and did nothing to destroy it. The others tried to explain to him that it was for water, and they did eventually convince him that it was harmless
