Description:

Two Fine Old Massim Ancestor Figures, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, Early 20th Century,
the two are quite different, one is a classical squatting figure with the elbows resting on the knees and the hands held to the chin. The other figure is a standing ancestor wearing an elaborate headdress that you dancers wearing in old photos from the time the famous Anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski was there doing his research resulted in the publication "The Argonauts of the Western Pacific".

The south-eastern tip of Papua New Guinea and several off-shore archipelagos—among them the d'Entrecasteaux, Trobriand Islands, and Marshall Bennett Islands—collectively form the culture area called Massim.
