Description:

Two Fine Old Massim Ancestor Figures, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, Early 20th Century,
the two are quite different, one is a classical squatting figure with the elbows resting on the knees and the hands held to the chin. The other figure is a standing ancestor with the hands held to the chin.

The south-eastern tip of Papua New Guinea and several off-shore archipelagos—among them the d'Entrecasteaux, Trobriand Islands, and Marshall Bennett Islands—collectively form the culture area called Massim.
