A Fine Old Wood Trumpet, Iatmul People, Middle Sepik River Area, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea, Early to Mid-20th Century,
on a custom stand.

Wood trumpets like this old example were associated with headhunting and were kept as clan heirlooms over generations. They had oral histories attached to them. When blown correctly from top hole, they make a deep bass sound that could be heard from long distances.
