Description:

A Superb Old Crocodile Jaw Bone Dagger Called Eu Karowan, Asmat People, Remote NW Asmat Area, South Coast, West Papua (Irian Jaya), Indonesia, 19th to Early 20th Century,
on a custom stand.

These large daggers made from the lower jawbone of a large saltwater crocodile as associated with headhunting and are very important family heirlooms with oral histories attached. When I was living traveling in Asmat Villages for months at a time I always asked the people about the different types of historical artefacts that they or their grandparents made and used. These were one of the type of objects that I was shown but they were not for sale, the daggers had magical properties and were extremely important cultural objects. I bought this one & one other small example in all the years I was collection Asmat Art.
