LITERATURE:
Vallotton studied at the Academie Julian with Toulouse-Lautrec & exhibited with the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1885. He began exhibiting with the Nabis with Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Marice Denis & Aristide Maillol.
He came to prominence in the 1890's with his woodcuts, lithographs & illustrations. He was particularly influenced by Japanese woodblocks & he deliberatley simplified form to its most abstract. The Portrait of Puvis de Chavannes is considered one of his masterpieces, which was commissioned by The Studio in 1899
Vallotton's work was an important influence on 20th Century Modernism & the Art Deco movement.

Puvis de Chavannes, studied in Paris under Henri Scheffer 7 Thomas Coutrure, establishing studions in Place Pigalle & Neuilly. He first exhbited in the Paris Salon in 1850.
He was one of the first painters to deliberately simplify form & accentuate rhymthmic lines & use non naturalistic colours. By the end of his life he was one of France's most admired artists & a major influence on both the Symbolists & Post-Impressionists.
