LITERATURE:
The artist fled Nazi Germany in 1934, with his wife, to Tahiti, via Martinique & the Panama Canal, hoping to start a vanilla plantation. However, he was unable to pursue this ambition & turned to art instead. One of his first exhibitions was at the Bouganiville in Papeete, exhibiting also in Australia, Argentina & the US.
He was imprisoned in 1939 because of his German birth & remained there until 1945, his wife smuggling art supplies in to allow him to continue his art & support his family.
The family was sponsored to the US in 1948, exhibiting in California into the 1980s & 1990s, & turnin his talents to textile design. Continuing to exhibit his work The artist died in Los Angeles.
