Three Fine Old Cut Spiral Conus Shells from the Western Solomon Islands, 18th - 19th Century,
these beautiful Shell Ornaments are a traditional type of wealth are called 'Hokata' and are made from Conus shells. It would have taken a lot of time and great skill to cut these using only sand and bamboo friction methods making them more valuable.

These were valuable objects and used in barter, marital rituals, as compensation transfers and were given to chiefs They were also used to decorate skull shrines of important men.
These were the best three I ever owned, I had them put on these specials custom stands to make them look amazing.

Provenance:
B. L. Hornshaw collection (1878-1937); Hornshaw was an avid collector of Pacific and Australian Aboriginal artefacts, he received many of his pieces from people who lived and worked in the Pacific in the late 19th Century.
