Description:

Traditional Dayak Skirt,
This skirt or kain kebat is made from traditionally patterned ikat cloth sewn into a cylinder or tube, and worn like a short sarong. It was also hand-woven by Dayak women in a longhouse on the Rajang River a half a century or more ago. The designs on kain kebat are usually finer and more intricate than on the larger pua kundu. They are not simply a garment of beauty worn to attract attention or to advertise a weaver's skill. They are also used as ritual payment and, in some cases, acts as currency for fines. For this reason, skirts do not remain the personal property of the weaver, but are the property of the bilek or family unit in the longhouse. The bilek is paramount, and daughters and granddaughters proudly wear heirloom skirts woven by their foremothers.
